On the left you have the grand spiral galaxy Messier 81, aka Bode's Galaxy, discovered in 1774 by Johann Elert Bode. Located approximately 12 million light-years from Earth. It has a diameter of 90,000 light-years making it about half the size of our own Milky Way.
On the right is Messier 82, aka the Cigar galaxy. This is a starburst galaxy located about the same distance from Earth. It is about 5 times brighter than the Milky Way. In 2005, the Hubble Space Telescope revealed there are 197 young massive star clusters in the starburst core.
